Exploring Necker Island, British Virgin Islands

Imagine swaying palm trees fringing pristine white sand beaches. Picture turquoise waters teeming with tropical life and lush tropical vegetation blanketing rolling hills. You’re on Necker Island, a secluded paradise at the northeastern extreme of the British Virgin Islands.

Necker Island is part of Virgin Limited Edition, Sir Richard Branson’s collection of unique retreats. The island isn’t just stunning; it’s a luxurious private retreat designed to indulge and captivate discerning guests.

The island spans 74 acres and operates like a resort, accommodating up to 28 guests. It’s primarily enjoyed as a private holiday island by families and friends. Corporate companies also use the island as a top-level incentive destination or inspiring retreat.

Previously uninhabited, the House on Devil’s Hill is the only residence on the island. Apart from your staff, you and your party are the only inhabitants on this private island.

Necker Island offers an intimate feel yet surprises with its diverse landscape. Hike through verdant trails teeming with colorful birds. Unwind on secluded coves kissed by gentle waves, or snorkel vibrant coral reefs teeming with colorful fish.

Adventure seekers can test their limits on the waterslide plunging into the ocean from the Great House. Meanwhile, tennis enthusiasts can challenge themselves on the championship-standard court.

Accommodation on Necker Island isn’t just about rooms; it’s an experience. The Great House, Branson’s personal island home, provides opulent living with 11 bedrooms. It has sprawling outdoor areas and even a tennis pavilion tucked within its walls.

Scattered around the island are ten individual Bali Houses, each offering distinct charm and breathtaking views. Whether you seek the grandeur of the Great House or the privacy of a Bali House, every stay comes with impeccable service.

But Necker Island isn’t just about relaxation and luxury. It’s a playground for the adventurous and curious. Explore the surrounding islands by catamaran. Indulge in adrenaline-pumping watersports or embark on guided dives alongside turtles and stingrays.

Beyond its natural beauty and opulent accommodations, Necker Island prides itself on its commitment to sustainability. Eco-friendly practices are deeply woven into the island’s operations. This responsible approach allows guests to indulge in luxury without compromising their environmental values.

Are you seeking a romantic getaway or a grand family reunion? Perhaps, you want to gather your friends for a memorable celebration. Whatever your plans, Necker Island promises an experience beyond compare.

Necker Island Activities

The island’s activities are virtually endless.  Choose to enjoy the beach Olympics, rousing tennis tournaments, invigorating sailing, sensational snorkeling and unforgettable kite-surfing. For those feeling a bit less sporty, the Bali Leha Spa awaits. There’s also the blissful prospect of simply soaking up some Caribbean sun on a perfectly secluded, pristine beach.

Necker Island Beaches

The island has several sandy beaches including the “main beach” (where the beach pavilion is located) and Turtle Beach. Turtle Beach is a more peaceful palm-fringed beach with hammocks hanging between the palm trees. You can also use an aqua trampoline anchored in the bay and kayaks.

Necker Island Dining

Every evening is a true adventure as guests dine at some of the most stunning locations around the island. Imagine a beach BBQ on Turtle Beach, sushi lounging poolside, or exquisite gala evenings in the Great House. On this most idyllic of Caribbean islands, guests can eat whatever they want and in whatever fashion they like. The island chefs will prepare your favorite food and wow you with their sensational Michelin-star cuisine.

Or, dress up and push the boat out, venturing to a nearby island for dinner; whatever you want to do, it’s your own affair.

Getting There

The island is part of the British Virgin Islands. The nearest islands are Virgin Gorda and Tortola (30 minutes by boat).

From Tortola’s Beef Island Airport, high-speed power boats collect guests before sundown. However, you’re free to travel by helicopter directly to the island.

Please note that if you fly into Barbados or St Lucia, you won’t be able to make connections to Tortola on the same day. You would have to stay overnight and catch a morning flight unless you choose to charter your own small plane.

Rates for the island start from US $322,000 for 7 nights, and there is a 5-night minimum stay. Please inquire about the island’s “celebration weeks.” Within these weeks, couples can book 7-night accommodation and experience the island with other guests.
