About the Islands
|
The British Virgin Islands are located 60 miles
East of Puerto Rico in the Northern Caribbean
chain of Islands. Also known as BVIs. History
records that these islands were formed about 100
million years ago. The main island, TORTOLA, is
a ferry ride of 40 minutes away from St. Thomas
in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Just two miles of
sea separate Tortola from St. John in the U.S.
Virgin Islands.
|
| |
There are about 50 islands, islets, rocks and
cays. Sixteen islands are inhabited. They are
mainly mountainous having been formed from volcanic
remains. The northernmost of the chain, the island
of Anegada is flat and of coral and limestone
formation. All of the British Virgin Islands are
full of natural beauty, verdant green hillsides
rise from sapphire blue seas and pristine beaches.
The reefs abound with tropical fish and other
sea life and flora. Add to this setting a population
of charming friendly native islanders.
